Tournament Rules

With 4 exceptions (Rules 1 - 3 and 14), SFVC summer tournaments will be governed by the USA Volleyball rules as stated at http://www.usavolleyball.org/officiat/rule_book.htm.
Referees are assigned to referee, not keep score only. These rules are your responsibility for each match.

  1. No finger tip action to send the ball over the net (i.e. third hit or not). If the ball leaves your hands (i.e. finger tip action), it must be touched by a teammate before crossing the plane of the net (exception to rule 13.4.5).
  2. A block does not constitute a first contact (exception to rule 13.1.3).
  3. If you serve out of rotation, there is no penalty. Fix the services order and continue play. There is no loss of serve, no loss of points, no replays (exception to rule 16.3 and 16.8).
  4. All sets will be side out scoring, until 4pm at which time we will go to rally scoring (rule 7.1.4).
  5. Without double contact, finger action is legal on serve receive (rule 13.4.2).
  6. Double contact, without finger action (i.e. Gator, beach dig etc.) is legal on first contact serve receive or hard driven attack. Quality of technique is not judged on any hard-driven contact. This means that an "ugly" dig is legal (gator, beach dig, etc.). Prolonged contact is still illegal in all cases (rule 13.4.3).
  7. Four or five hits per player for warm-ups. No peppering on the court. Referees please enforce this rule.
  8. If the ball is in the plane of the net, anyone can play it.
  9. Talking to the opponent through the net, or cursing is unsportsmanship. Referees give one warning then assess 1 point for each infraction.
  10. If the ball causes the line to move, the ball is in.
  11. If a player contacts the net, even after the ball is dead it is a net violation i.e. follow through violations.
  12. If you go under the net into the opponent’s court, it is OK unless you interfere with your opponents play. Referees please make this call, to ensure fair play and no injuries.

Coed Rules

  1. No courtesy rule. If you need a guy to serve a guy or vice versa, your team is probably playing too high a level.
  2. In reverse coed, if a male player contacts the ball on or in front of the 3 meter line, and the ball crosses the plane of the net without the female partner making the next contact, some part of the ball must be below the height of the net at the point of contact.
  3. For the playoffs in a split net tournament the higher seed team chooses the net. Higher seed is determined by winning game percentage, then total pool play net points.

Substitution Rules

The intent of the rule is to allow a new player, a player who gets lost, a night shift worker, etc. to still play. It is not intended to allow a team to gain an advantage. As with the application of all rules, the tournament director has final decision regarding application of this rule.

  1. A Substitution may occur only in triples competition
  2. Player has not played that day, in any level.
  3. Substitution is made to the tournament director before the first serve of the 2nd pool play match for the team executing the substitution.
